Samsung launches new mid to low end smartphones to increase Exynos AP market share

Mar 18,2024

Samsung Electronics has launched new mid to low end smartphone models, Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55, with the goal of regaining the largest market share in the global smartphone market and increasing the adoption rate of its internal application processor (AP) Exynos chip.

After the launch of Samsung's first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone Galaxy S24 series in early 2024, it was initially speculated that the Galaxy A55, equipped with Samsung's new One UI 6.1 system, would incorporate some AI features. However, judging from the specifications of Samsung's new models, it seems too early for affordable models to be equipped with AI. The main features of Galaxy AI may only be provided in flagship models.

Industry analysis suggests that although Samsung has been focusing on competing in the high-end smartphone market since 2024, it also hopes to enhance its competitiveness in the mid to low-end smartphone market.

According to market research firm IDC, Apple surpassed Samsung for the first time in 2023 with 234 million units shipped and 20.1% market share, occupying the top spot in the 2023 smartphone market share ranking.

Although Samsung has launched the S24 series with generative AI to meet the growing demand for high-end smartphones, mid to low-end smartphones account for the majority of sales. Therefore, the launch of Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55 is a strategic initiative to seize market share in this field.

Generally speaking, the annual shipment of Samsung Galaxy series exceeds 200 million units. The high-end Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Z series foldable screens are expected to sell 50-60 million units. The remaining sales are expected to be completed by the Galaxy A series.

In 2024, Samsung deployed its own Exynos AP in high-end smartphones and actively deployed it in mid to low-end smartphones. From the more high-end Galaxy A55 to the more affordable Galaxy A25 and Galaxy A35, they are all equipped with Exynos AP. In the past, Galaxy A series products mostly used MediaTek AP.

Looking back at 2023, due to performance controversies, Samsung did not release any new high-end Exynos products. However, in early 2024, Samsung announced the revival of its high-end AP business through the Exynos 2400. In addition, Samsung is also competing with Qualcomm and MediaTek in terms of cost-effectiveness in the mid-range AP market.
