Mar 05,2025

On March 3rd, market research firm Jon Peddie Research reported that the global PC based graphics processing unit (GPU) market grew by 6.2% to 78 million units in the fourth quarter of 2024, with PC CPU shipments increasing to 72 million units. Overall, the compound annual growth rate of GPUs from 2024 to 2028 is -1%, and they will reach an installed base of 3.008 billion units by the end of the forecast period. In the next five years, the penetration rate of independent GPUs (dGPU) in PCs will reach 15%.

The organization stated that compared to the same period last year, the total GPU shipments, including all platforms and GPUs, increased by 1%, desktop graphics card shipments decreased by 3%, and laptop shipments increased by 2%. From the perspective of manufacturer performance, AMD's overall GPU market share increased by 1% compared to the previous quarter, Intel's market share increased by 0.8%, and Nvidia's market share decreased by 1.8%.

Dr. Jon Peddie, President of Research Jon Peddie said, "The threat of tariffs imposed on multiple countries exporting to the United States has caused global political turmoil, making markets, including the stock market, uneasy and causing consumers to either rush to buy to avoid price increases or not buy at all. Nvidia, which has the largest market share, is struggling to meet demand due to their size and influence, hindering the growth of the GPU market. Although this will result in a significant backlog for them and AMD in the first quarter, tariffs will offset most of the further growth in 2025. Although artificial intelligence personal computers are exciting, they are not enough to incentivize consumers to consume ahead of time
