French monitor developer Aledia invests $200 million to open MicroLED monitor production line

French based Micro LED display developer Aledia has invested $200 million to open a production line in France to produce 3D nanowire MicroLED displays for augmented reality (AR).

This Grenoble based company has raised 600 million euros in the past decade, with Intel and IKEA as investors. The company has an industrial pilot production line worth 100 million euros and has started production in a 5000 square meter clean room.

The prototype of AR smart glasses will be put into commercial use as early as 2027. The new production line located in Champagnier uses semiconductor grade 200mm and 300m silicon wafers to reduce the production cost of large-scale production of MicroLEDs. Pierre Laboisse, CEO of Aledia, stated that the company is ready and capable of meeting customer demand for nearly 5000 wafers per week. Previously, Tower Semiconductor had been manufacturing these devices.

Aledia's microdisplay is based on its unique nanowire technology, manufactured using a 3D gallium nitride (GaN) structure with red, green, and blue MicroLEDs on the same substrate. The 3D structure enables precise and directional light emission, making Aledia's display very efficient.

Hybrid bonding technology integrates MicroLED and driver electronic components into one package, resulting in thinner displays, higher power efficiency, and extended battery life.

Immersive technologies such as AR have not yet fully realized their potential because the industry has not yet designed screens that are both stylish and powerful, "Laboisse said." At Alexandria, we have created a nanowire technology that makes MicroLED displays thinner, more energy-efficient, and easier to mass produce. By the next CES, OLED and LCOS will be replaced by MicroLED technology

Our Champagnier factory is a key milestone in European innovation, "Laboisse said." We have redefined global display technology standards through efficient and high-performance chips, positioning Grenoble as the center of global MicroLED production
